Henna Artists and Their Art:
Jen Schafer

Location: Near Toledo and will travel to Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Ann Arbor and Forte Wayne.
Available for parties, festivals, private appointments and for teaching workshops and classes. Specializes in traditional, bridal and contemporary styles.
I use henna, lemon juice (or Coke in a pinch), tea tree, lavender, and/or cajeput, and sugar and/or honey. I don't measure anything. I do it by eye. I mix the henna and juice, cover and let it sit overnight. Then I add the oils and sugar, let it sit a little longer, put it in cones and freez it. The amount of time I let it sit varries with the weather.

Shawn at Stroke of Luck Henna
Here
are a few photos of Shawn's Mehndi body art on clients after paste-removal.
"These designs were created for a friend using Jamila mixed with Tea Tree oil,
sugar and fresh lemon juice. The paste was left on for about 6 hours after being
sealed with lemon and sugar mixture (my friend is not a patient woman), and the
photo was taken 24 hours after paste removal. It was a spur-of-the moment design,
with inspirations from a variety of elements. I prefer to use jacquard bottles
with tips for my designs, and love the freedom of working from my imagination.
I
design patterns from many inspirations, but specialize in historically-based,
traditional henna because I belong to a Middle Ages Living History group. My
favorite designs tend to be Indian and Persian (especially 9-11th century) adaptations
from art and rugs. While I can duplicate patterns, and do even create my
own occasionally, my favorite way to work is to just let it flow. This is always
my best work, and my client's always agree.
I have been sharing my mehndi with others for about 2 years, but just officially "opened
up shop" in early 2003. Living in a conservative area, part of my joy is educating
the community about henna and other diverse cultural ideas."

Jen Martini: Wishful Inking
"This
design was created with Kimia for my first wedding anniversary September 15,
2002. It was pieced out of different design elements that had significance for
me, many of which can be found in "Henna, The Joyous Body Art" by Catherine
Cartwright Jones which can be found on this site or on CCJ's free henna patterns.
Henna designs are inspired by and can be used to celebrate
many things. To begin, the finger patterns I chose are Iranian from the 16th
century, where Kimia is from, to honor her. The flowers across my knuckles are
pink carnations, symbolizing marriage. The center band is a bear and a bunny.
These are the nicknames my husband and I have chosen for each other. The center
of the design is Arabic calligraphy 'hub' - love surrounded by creeper vines
which celebrate a growing family. The flower on the bottom trailing along up
my thumb is an Islamic flower design I liked from 15th century Isfahan.
This
design was my first time using a handrolled cone (I used a square of proscuittio
wrapper because it was stiffer for a finer line). The paste was rather simple,
Kimia mixed with clove simmered lemon juice, honey, and cajeput terped. It was
sealed with lemon/sugar, steamed 2 or 3 times, and wrapped with tissue and a
sock. The pics were taken 2 days after paste removal.
I've wanted to do henna a long time. It seemed to combine
so many other things I love. Loves - of art, history, body decoration, and my
delight in sharing something beautiful (my husband calls me Bunny because when
I'm excited I bounce on the balls of my feet lol and henna makes me jump with
joy!).
My catalyst for getting into gear and getting some henna
came from a small fair where I met a local henna artist named Dagmar who after
extensively talking to about henna told me "I'm really suprised you haven't
taught yourself how!" The lightbulb went off and I had to ask myself so
why haven't I? I looked around and ordered my first batch of henna and since
then, I have been happily hennaing for almost two months. I've done a little
professionally thanks to the support and encouragement of my wonderful family
and want to pursue it even further as an art and profession.
If you are local to the Seattle area please feel free to
contact me at WishfulInking@aol.com.
Once I have more pics to share I will be creating a website that you can find
a link to here.
Thanks for looking and may you have light hearts and dark
stains!"
Maureen's note: I just love Jen's story about her inspiration
for this particular henna design. It is such an excellent example of the powerful
statements about love and other things important that this art form allows to
be expressed in such a personal and beautiful way. And do look Jen up if you
are in her area. Don't let the 2 months she has been doing Mehndi fool you. Jen
brings lots of talent and know how this art form...as you can see by her work.
Thanks Jen, for sharing your pictures, thoughts and feelings.

Paul Cerra
 Paul
is such a wonderkin. Here is his speed slinging work with Malimba Moroccan. Sometime
last spring, Paul began his henna adventure. Look at his work. He is just wonderful
and I am glad that he allowed me to share his work here. Paul is located in Southern
California and as soon as he allows me to, I will post here how you can get in
touch with him to have excellent Mehndi provided by him. This is an example of
Paul "speed slinging." This is one of his 15 minute designs. NOT an
easy thing to do. Rendering a beautiful henna design with both speed and accuracy
is a rare talent. It is rare to find a henna artist in the U.S. with this ability.
Come back as I add more of Paul's work here...and to learn how to contact him
for an appointment.
