Hair Care | Skin Care | Bath & Body | Gift Baskets

I hear from many people with questions concerning hair loss, thinning hair, promoting hair growth, etc.  Here is some information that might be of interest concerning the use of herbs and/or essential oils for haircare, skincare, hair growth and hair loss.

1. Zinc, B complex, C and E vitamins are all beneficial to the growth and health of hair. Also, foods high in biotin like brewer's yeast, brown rice, bulgur, green peas, lentils, oats, soybeans, sunflower seeds, and walnuts will promote healthy hair and skin. The addition of green salads, shitake mushrooms and beans to you daily diet will help

2. A rinse made of apple cider vinegar and sage tea will help hair growth.

3. Try this recipe to aid in hair growth and combat hair loss:
Mix--

  • 2 drops of cedarwood essential oil
  • 3 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops of rosemary essential oil
  • 2 drops of thyme essential oil
  • 3 drops spikenard essential oil
  • 4 teaspoons jojoba oil (base oil)
  • 2 teaspoons grapeseed oil or macadamia nut oil (base oil)

Mix these oils and massage your scalp with them nightly.  You may also use this mixture for a deep heat oil conditioning.

4. Nettle sting, calendula flower & marsh mallow root are all excellent when combined in an infusion or a rinse for dry hair to nourish it and encourage new growth. You can make a tea brew to use for rinsing or an oil infusion for the hair with these.

Herbal Tea Brew/Rinse or Oil Infusion:

  1. Place your herbs in the bottom of a pan.
  2. n a separate pan, heat your oil or boil your water.
  3. Pour the hot oil or hot water over the herbs.
  4. Cover and allow to sit 48 hours.
  5. For tea brew, strain off the herbs.  For infused oil, herbs may be left in or strained off.
  6. Transfer tea brew or oil infusion in to a container with a lid.
  7. Refrigerate and allow to sit for a week prior to use.
  8. Use the tea brew as a rinse after washing your hair.
  9. Use the oil infusion as an oil to massage scalp and/or deep condition hair.

HERBS FOR HAIR LOSS

  1. Ginkgo to help with circulation to the hair follicles and skin.
  2. Horsetail is rich in mineral content including silica which is essential for healthy skin, nails and hair.
  3. Han Lian Cao, "Drought Lotus Grass", Latin Name: Eclipta prostata or Eclipta alba
was used in an infused oil in China to help with Hair regrowth.
  4. Tincture or Infused oil of Arnica is also supposed to stimulate hair growth when applied to the scalp, Arnica is not recommended for internal use.
  5. Birch oil supports hair growth and is best used in combination with Queen of the Meadow oil. Add these to your shampoo.
  6. Rosemary, Latin Name: Rosmarinus officinalis as a daily rinse on the scalp and hairs promote hair growth.

Common causes of hair loss or hair growth:

  • infection
  • stress
  • hormonal fluctuations
  • deficient diet
  • lack of circulation
  • blocked pores
  • aging

If hair is starting to thin due to loss of estrogen production, there are herbs reported to simulate estrogen in the system and to stimulate the adrenal glands. Some that have been used are:

  • wild yam root
  • licorice
  • motherwort
  • black cohosh
  • chamomile
  • valerian root
  • skullcap

When hair loss is due to stress, you might want to try an adaptogen herb which helps the body deal with stress, the ginsengs are of this class. Siberian Ginseng is the mildest, American Ginseng would be the next. Chinese Ginseng is the strongest. Typically the Siberian Ginseng works excellently. Make a tea from the powder.
